Cows naturally evolved to walk around and eat grass. But most of the beef sold in the United States are actually from cows that are kept in cramped factory farms with little to no space to walk, and eat a diet consisting of genetically modified corn, soy, and other grains. They are fed leftovers from human food production. These GMO crops disrupt the cow’s microbiome. Cows were not evolved to eat grains. They were not made to digest grains. So they get sick. The tight living conditions make it easy for the illnesses to spread to other cows.
So the cows get sick from GMO foods. How do farmers fix that? Well they give them antibiotics. The antibiotics kill all the good probiotics in the cow’s gut, making them even weaker.
In order to increase the speed and quantity of beef production, cows are also given synthetic recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) which make them grow unnaturally big at a quicker rate.
So what happens when we eat conventional GMO-grain-fed beef injected with antibiotics and growth hormones? We are not eating healthy cows. We are eating sick cows who eat unnatural substances. These substances get into our bodies when we eat them. The overuse of antibiotics is creating many antibiotic-resistant bacteria. So when we really need to fight the bacteria, the antibiotics no longer work. These growth hormones are disrupting our children’s endocrine systems and causing early puberty.
Why do they raise cows in such a cruel and unnatural way? Money. It’s more expensive and requires more land to raise grass-fed cows. The rate of meat production is also slower. With factory farms, hundreds of cows can be crammed in a tiny barn and injected with growth hormones to make them grow quickly. Why feed them GMO-grains? Well the United States government highly subsidizes genetically modified corn and soybeans. So farmers grow lots and lots of them and feed the excess to livestock. It’s cheap.
You are what you eat. Grass-fed beef is much healthier than grain-fed beef. It contains conjugated linoleic acid and more healthy Omega-3 fats. It also has much more vitamin K2 and antioxidants such as vitamin E. If you don’t want to be eating GMO foods and being exposed to growth hormones and antibiotics, then choose grass-fed beef. This applies to dairy from grass-fed cows too. It’s important to make sure your milk and yogurt comes from grass-fed cows too. It may be more expensive, but it’s worth it for your health.
Also, just because it’s organic, doesn’t mean it’s grass-fed. It could be fed organic grains. So make sure it’s 100% grass-fed.
