Drinking water too close to bedtime can cause you to wake up to urinate more often at night. This can disrupt your sleep.
Usually, we do not urinate as much at night when we sleep. But drinking water can change that and cause us to wake up multiple times a night to sleep. It is recommended that we get 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Sleep deprivation can negatively affect your health, increasing risk of stroke or heart attack.
So when should you drink water? Drink water throughout the day, but try not to drink water within 2 hours before bedtime, for it can cause increased nighttime urination. To determine if you’re dehydrated, look at the color of your urine. If it’s dark, then you may be dehydrated. If you’re hydrated, your urine will be light yellow to clear.
